Saint Procopius of Scythopolis was born in Jerusalem and, after converting many to the faith, was martyred under Emperor Diocletian. Venerated in numerous cult centers throughout the Christian world, his legacy gave rise to a variety of legends, often contradictory in nature. He was said to have been the prince of Alexandria, an ascetic, a Persian, and, as depicted on our piece, a soldier.
